Building strong lessons through planning, flexibility and engagement

One of the most important things I’ve learned about teaching is that strong lesson planning is the foundation for student success. Clear objectives, aligned standards, and thoughtful assessments help keep instruction focused and meaningful.

A best practice I’ve found is building flexibility into every lesson. Even with a solid plan, students may need more time or different approaches to fully understand a concept. Having backup activities and using quick checks for understanding helps keep learning on track.

An action plan I use is connecting every lesson to real-world applications, especially in culinary arts. When students see how skills apply to careers, they stay more engaged and motivated. I also try to incorporate hands-on learning whenever possible.

One success has been seeing students grow more confident in the kitchen as they master basic skills and work together effectively. A challenge is managing time during lab activities while still allowing students enough practice. Overall, consistent planning and reflection help improve both teaching and learning.
