Activity

Shift your focus from seat time (how long students sit in class) to mastery (what students actually know and can do).

I learned that a safe lab starts with clear expectations, consistent routines, and close supervision. I reinforce safety procedures in every class and model safe practices while students work.

I plan to use observations, skill checklists, and feedback throughout each lab to help students improve.  Evaluating student progress should be ongoing and based on both knowledge and hands-on skills.

Effective lab teaching relies on clear demonstrations, safety procedures, and lots of hands-on practice with teacher guidance. I plan to use step-by-step modeling in my culinary labs and circulate often to give feedback while students are working.

Competency-based education focuses on students mastering specific skills at their own pace rather than just completing time-based assignments. I use this in my culinary classes by assessing students based on demonstrated skills in the kitchen, making sure they can actually perform each task before moving on.

Measuring student mastery should be ongoing and not just based on a final test. I plan to use quick checks for understanding during class and hands-on demonstrations in my culinary labs to see if students can actually apply what they’ve learned.

Planning questions ahead of time helps keep students engaged and encourages deeper thinking. In my culinary classes, I plan to use more open-ended questions during labs so students can explain their decisions and problem-solving.

Technology is most effective when it supports learning and student engagement rather than being used just for its own sake. As a culinary teacher, I plan to use videos, digital recipes, and online demonstrations to reinforce hands-on skills and keep students engaged.

Impactful lessons are most effective when they are clearly structured, include active learning, and use a mix of questioning strategies to keep students engaged. I plan to apply this by being more intentional with lesson flow, especially adding more student thinking time and hands-on practice.  Starting the day by asking how everyone is doing gives you a better understanding of what type of lesson will be good for the day.

Using a mix of questions and more wait time to help students think more deeply. I plan to use more open-ended questions during labs to improve discussion and understanding.
