Having taken this course I now have a much better understanding of instructing those w/disabilities (seen and unseen). Presently, I have a student who uses a motorized w/c - she has CP. One day I was unsure if I would be overstepping my bounds by assisting her w/getting the door for her to leave my class; this was prior to this course. Later, that same day I saw her as she was about to enter the restroom; I asked her if she needed my help getting the door; she said she appreciated it. I spoke w/her afterwards explaining growing up I had a friend with spinal bifida; who would become irrate if you tried to help him; he used bilateral crutches and braces; he would not park in a "handicapped" spot because he was "not" handicapped - as it was called at the time. Because of my previous experience I treaded lightly with my student; not wanting to offend her. I learned a great deal from her as well as from this course.
