Retention of the Student

Often times when I have students in my classes or in clinic, and they tell me personal things, in the past I have often felt this is something I don't need to know about. Its hard to know when it is ok to step in and be a counselor, and when to sit back and say nothing at all. It seems to me that the older students (those in their 30's and 40's) are better capable of handling their personal issues then the younger students (late teens to twenty something). These younger students want to expound on their troubles more, to feel more accepted.
