The best first day is one where the student has found a place to learn. We assume that students come to learn, but in reality, they arrive with questions and anxiety ahead of learning. As instructors, we're eager to teach and often in a first-class setting, students are not ready to learn until they feel the environment and the reason for learning is comfortable and established. This is an enormous opportunity for us to include and welcome the student to "their" class, not ours. "They" make the class, we don't. We need to cultivate that environment and establish the reason and the methods to open their attention and begin the learning process.
