I have done quite a bit of research on remediation in nursing education and the part that I found most fascinating is that students want relationships with their faculty members. They want trust and rapport. I often feel like, as faculty, that we try to talk a big talk and walk a big walk, and it is important to role model professionalism and maintain standards. However, it is okay to have fun and get to know them. It is difficult to lead people if we don't know those people and their individual needs. This training reminded me that orientation is ongoing and that we all have a part and role is student retention. My plan is to get to know the students I am working with so that I can find strategies and resources to support them in a way that they need.
