Story telling

Best Practices:

My story telling usually involves a real example of what actually happened with a piece of equipment or doing  a test. I'm teaching a lab class. One example was when my brother damaged and injured his shoulder while lifting weights. The class is studying rad. testing/studies  and I shared the rad. test that he had done before actually having the surgery and what rad. tests and studies was done after surgery. I try to bring the real world into my class room so that the students understand how important it is to be accountable for ones action, being an advocate for your pt., explain the importance in following doctor's orders, seeking a second opinion when in doubt, and  how to work with a team, and how important little things are, even if it's just a smile, touch or saying thank you to the patient. I want them to learn that there's know "I" in the word team.

Action plan / successes and challenges:

Power point presentations on topic first, then the story, followed by the students doing homework and reading the assignments, after all that the next class we have question/answer session on the topic. I know these are a lot of steps but I want them to be able to mentally see the picture. I also use Youtube videos to make my point, and as a visual aide.
