Challenge

What do you do to overcome the obsacle of learning that is the result of students who do not prepare for class? It makes it difficult to proceed with classroom activities when the students do not do the outside reading or review that is necessary to be able to complete activities or participate in classroom discussions on the content or application of the content.

A few suggestions if I may add...maybe perhaps give the class student-centered activities (hands-on).  One activity I do with my students is: I put them into groups to discuss a topic about the lesson.  I give them a certain amount of time to talk among themselves.  Once time is up, I have each group to discuss in front of the class their topic.  Also, I open the class up to discussion debates.  This activity engages the students and keeps it simple and not bored.  You are keeping them involved in the learning process.  Although we are instructors, it's a good idea to get the students involved.

I give my students pop quizzes.

How do you communicate with your students as far as reminding them of their assignments? Do you send out emails or create a forum?  I communicate with my students through an App called Remind. Remind is an App that sends alerts to my students to tell them about their upcoming test, quiz, assignments, and projects, etc.  When I post their grades, I send out a group message to my students letting them know that I've posted grades.  If you decide to use the Remind App, you can remind your students to read the weekly reading assignments and remind them of upcoming deadlines.
