We use the 7 principles of learning because they help improve student success by promoting active learning, clear expectations, timely feedback, and strong interaction between students and instructors.

Goals and strategies are needed by students to be successful in online study.

Don't and don't let your students procrastinate.  Keep them engaged

keep students engaged and time management implemented.

It is important to teach students to not procrastinate because it wastes too much time.

I have always enjoyed the autonomy of online learning. But, I need to remember some students struggle with self paced learning. As an instructor, I need to help them set goals and time frames to make sure they succeed.

In a section of this module, “The Seven Principles” developed and revised (1996) by Chickering and Ehrmann inform us that new technologies and information enhanced the core educational practices.  The Seven Principles follow:

  • Encourage contact between students and the instructor.
  • Develop reciprocity and cooperation among students.
  • Encourage active learning.
  • Provide prompt feedback.
  • Emphasize time on task.
  • Communicate high expectations.
  • Respect diverse talents and ways of learning.

The concept that relies on “cooperation among students” is one that I believe, if properly utilized, can lead to true collaboration among students.  It’s important for them to learn that the professional world relies less on the Lone Wolf (going solo) and more on team effort.  Shared learning can be enhanced with the use of discussion forums in an online course.

It's critical to communicate with students and keep them engaged. Helping them build good time management skills will help motivate them.

I think the 7 principles of learning is very interesting . It is important to understand that there is a viewpoint to be understood from both the student and instructor.

Mastering time management is all about strategy, awareness, and consistency.

If we can teach our students time management skills and how to be accountable for their own time and actions, i think we will have more successful outcomes

Students must be held accountable. They may think online is easier, but there are so many obstacles. They need to be prepared, and willing to learn.

For me the takeaway in this section is the more you help your students know the importance of and apply good time management skills, the more successful they will be!

Keeping students engaged and using various methods is a surefire way to keep students interested in the material

By keeping students engaged in the lesson it can help prevent things like procrastination or avoiding doing work. By instilling confidence in your students that you are available to help them it will positively affect their experience.

From this module, I learned that online learning requires a combination of self-discipline, organization, active participation, and effective time management.

I intend to apply these techniques by establishing a structured schedule for my online student encouraging them to participate actively in discussion and group activities.

It is important for online learners to understand their own strengths and weaknesses so they can build effective study habits. Developing strong time‑management skills is essential, and being aware of common pitfalls; such as procrastination, helps students stay focused and avoid falling behind. Recognizing these factors empowers learners to take control of their progress and succeed in an online environment.

The quote by Benjamin Franklin is true: "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail."

Also, students must be informed of the consequences of breaking the social code (netiquette rules). Consequences may include points being deducted from their participation grade, revoking privileges of certain communication areas, or other consequences depending on the severity of the act.

Help the students avoid the pitfall of procrastination.  Encourage students to develop schedules that work for them and stick to the schedules to get assignments done on time or even better to work ahead.

Many people think on line learning is easy and less time consuming than the traditional classroom.  It is not.

Effective time management and active participation are most important for success in online learning.
