Enhancing the Motivation of Adult Students --> Autonomy – A Component of Motivation

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

From this module, I learned that autonomy is an important component of motivation because it allows students to take ownership of their learning and become more independent and confident. When students are given opportunities to make choices, express their ideas, and take responsibility for their progress, they become more engaged and motivated to succeed. I also learned that autonomy is just as important for instructors because it allows them to use their knowledge, experience, and creativity to make instructional decisions that best support their students.

I intend to apply what I have learned by encouraging students to take an active role in their education, giving them opportunities to make choices, and allowing them to explore different ways of completing assignments and demonstrating their understanding. As an instructor, I also want to maintain the confidence and flexibility to use teaching strategies that meet the needs of my students. I believe that when both instructors and students have a sense of autonomy, the classroom becomes a more positive, engaging, and motivating learning environment.

I learned that giving adult learners more freedom in their learning can help them feel more involved and take responsibility for their progress. I think it's important to find a balance between letting students explore their own ideas and providing enough structure and guidance, especially when teaching some of the technical skills that build on each other.

The more autonomy an adult student has, the more they feel respected in their learning environment. This drives engagement. The onus is put on the student, and this can help us get the best academic outcomes.

Giving students real world situational problems/assignments enhances critical thinking and is more in tune with adult learning.

I enjoy leading discussions around students' work and workflow. These conversations encourage students to take ownership of their learning, discover new approaches, and feel a sense of accomplishment and pride in their efforts. They also create opportunities for group engagement, building trust, respect, and learning from one another.

Autonomy-driven courses are great confidence boosters. It gives them the ability to decide which route they want to go whether it is assignment/project based or career based. Most of the classes I teach have autonomy based projects which Students enjoy.

Many of the classes I teach are technical in nature. There is some push an pull with what I am capable of providing in the terms of autonomy. I want to provide a base that the student can build off of.

Autonomy in the previous experiences can be bad and good, it's nice to have full freedom to create anything that you can think of, however when there are technical requirements i feel that it is important to clearly define that, as we can end up with extremely low quality projects due to some one's "pre-conceived" idea of what "should" be a requirement.

I believe giving students a level of autonomy can be really useful and instructive, particularly if they're already beginning to get a handle on the material. However, as I teach an early class in the program, giving too much autonomy before a concept has really "locked in" with the student can result in a lot of blank stares and wondering what to do. I think it depends on the student and the degree of autonomy you feel you can grant them.

Granting students that courage and motivation in their learning journey through the ideas taught in this module is great for what opportunities they will be able have when shaping the classroom experience.

In the finals department, I have seen both positive and negative results when students are given full autonomy. Some students thrive with the freedom to make their own decisions, while others benefit from additional structure, clear boundaries, and guidance. Ultimately, I believe the effectiveness of student autonomy depends on the individual student, their level of experience, and their ability to manage their own learning.

With the use of autonomy, individuals show persistence, creativity, and psychological health. Have meaningful input into their learning process, learners are more likely to actively participate, maintain enthusiasm when problems arise, and embrace their educational goals.

Psychological safety is essential because adults bring prior experiences, identities, and vulnerabilities into the learning space.

I've been noticing how important autonomy-driven courses are. Out of the courses I've been teaching lately, most of them provide students with assignments where they're able to choose different assets or strategies to complete. One of the courses has a collaborative activity where students also have to make the decisions themselves, which I believe is really important to bring them real learning.

I have noticed the trend shifting towards autonomous learning. Some of my assignments already have these embedded in the Capstone class that I teach. I will implement more of the suggested strategies for a more secure and autonomous learning environment.

Allowing students to have autonomy can motivate them to reach higher goals and allows the instructor to guide along the way instead of spoon feeding students.

Students will be more engaged and eager to learn when they have a sense of ownership in the course or their studies in general.

This module reinforced the importance of autonomy in motivating adult learners. As an instructor, I've learned that students are more engaged when they feel ownership of their education and understand how their learning connects to real-world goals.

Some students needs more guidance than others. Creating an environment that support both guidance and self autonomy is the way to achieve a balance.
