Motivating your students is in my opinion the most important part of our job. Being able to let them know from experience gives substance to what they are putting themselves through. Knowing that the process requires dedication in addition to maintaining current life situations can be difficult at times. Taken for the harvard video presenters there are five factors that will help make you a more effective and clear communicator with your students.
- Know the subject
- Know the student. Take a look at the profile of each student and learn about their background and what motivates them (this must be done on the first day!)
- Set the expectation. This is achieved by engaging the students and knowing who can answer some key questions during classroom sessions.
- You MUST create an environment where people can take risks. DO NOT humiliate your student. It will come back ten-fold because they're not interested in learning; They're interested in survival. So, be aware of your style because that might intimidate or humiliate people so that they don't want to take risks.
- Great teachers transcend the message; they're bold and clear and approachable.
