“If it isn’t broke….”

For many years I have been struggling with introducing technology into my lesson plans. Why create power points when I have a white board and marker in my classroom? Why display it on a projector when I can hand out copies in my class?

Then one day I stopped over my in-laws and witnessed my Father in-law flip though a phone book to find the number for a local pizza shop. That’s when it dawned on me. That was me in the classroom. The Luddite embracing past technology because it still does the job. And I realized what my students were missing.

My failure to adopt technology in the classroom was the direct cause for some of them to not achieve academic success. It is not my whiteboard in my class. It is their education in their school. I am supposed to be a guide for the journey and I must provide as many avenues for success as possible.

Today in class we had an electronic jeopardy game with questions based off a video watched in class. With permission, the students were provided a link to the video they can access any time during the term on any device they use to access the class blog site.

Attendance, grades, and participation are up. Students are energized and taking that energy to the job market.
