What kind of literacy skills? At what level? I mean I agree, I just want some specifics so we can have a discussion. I think students in my experience lack basic gramar, spelling, and punctuation skills. I'd say most of them are not at a College level Composition 101 class. Everyone should be at this point in 2019. We all write all day. Might as well learn how to write properly. I think reading and writing proper English will help with speaking properly. Not sure how you are going to read only perfectly written English grammar literature that isn't completely dry and boring, but good enough writers could do it. I could do it. Give me a job.
