Yes, when I don't know much about the prior knowledge students possess is when I feel a pretest helps me the most. Barging ahead with assumptions about prior learning can result is some students being bored and others lost. I want to be able to reach the most students in the most effective way, and the pretest is one tool that can help in that way.
