From an employer standpoint, a graduate who is well versed in socio-civic-community activities but can't perform basic job duries safely is not employable. Probably there is a balance. Most accredited schools (associate and bachelor degree level) require a commensurate liberal arts component to their vocational training component for graduation, adhering to your notion that a well rounded individual will be a better employee.
