Hi Robin: For me, the simplest way to state the goal of educating is more functional: "to transfer knowledge we have to students, who can apply that to their personal lives and careers. Amplifying that a bit, we have the opportunity to convey much about the specific topics and course material, and also about the world of work, and the supporting factors that make work a success, such as the soft skills of timeliness, punctuallity and attendance, dress, behavior, appearance, language, attitutde and affect, motivation, and good communication. These kinds of things are often lacking in even some of the smarter academic students. So as teachers, we could add that our goal is to transfer good work and life skills to students, to be be good citizens, valuing others while respecting the diversity likely to be found in most contemporay work settings these days.
