An old saying I learned (in the 70's) was "90% of my students should be performing at 90% or above". While that may be a bit altruistic, it does point out that, in part, a students performance is based on the teachers instruction. And to ensure we are hitting the mark, early on and frequent discussion about grade status can help both the teacher and student know where weaker areas may need more attention.
