Most students want to know how they're doing. As an aside, I think whatever method a teacher uses to share course status, there should be some time avilable to personalize it - to encourage, support, inspire, and to convey that you care about their success.
I've found when students feel the teacher is rooting for their students success, that will foster better performance by the student.
