Programming this status update into the course is good. Even so, I think more frequent communication regarding performance and improvement is helpful.
Also, sharing that information in a kind and courteous way, offering support and encouragement, and giving advide and suggestions will comfort student and perhaps they'll realize "this teacher cares about my learning and success".
