I'm a believer in frequent status updates. I use electronic gradebooks and pretty much everything a student sees is instananeous from when I enter it.
But part of the reason to evaluate students is not just sharing grades and points,but also conveying something hum - caring, kind words courteosly conveyed with support and encouragement. Students will respond to advice when given in this manner.
