What I have learned is that language matters even when it is use toward or by the justice involved person and or those that support them. It's important to educate those that may use language that change the outcome of there discussion with hurt emotions and triggers. The way that I plan to use this lesson is to continue to recognize, interrupt and hopefully repair the damage with understanding when people speak in an un-polite way .
The more legwork and preparation I do, the easier it can be for someone already going through a lot. Knowing which barriers are surmountable and being upfront with students will only help them and employers.
Help students to understand the issue while also helping them to accept and make it easier to come forward with their past will give them the confidence to speak about it and move on.
Addressing the issues is more helpful to the student, it allows them to prepare for what to expect and how to answer questions or issues when they arise.
The goal for justice involved students is to finding employment that will either accept their record or find smaller employers that most likely wont run a background check. But it's also important to tell the student what areas of employment they will not be eligible for because of the record. Even if it's something less than a felony, there is still that chance that a small offense can still cause difficulties with employment.
