Student Services

What student services are offered by your institution and how do you plan to talk about them with prospective students?

We offer Cosmetology, Esthetics and Nail tech courses for students. I make sure to educate the student verbally and also show them exactly what i am talking about that way it processes. I make sure to cover what each course is, give details on each course, what schedules we offer and how long it will take to complete each course depending on what schedule they choose to enroll in. I make sure that when I am giving a tour that i include the staff members, instructors and introduce all prospect students to the Dean of education. A folder with all our school info including tuition, schedules and busniess card is included so if they meet with Financial Aid they are able to store their documents in our school folder. I believe verbally educating and also giving them the same info in writing helps a student make the decision to enroll because they can go home and really think about their schedules, their finances and make their goal realistic before they start school.

Amanda,

Fantastic! It sounds like you are on top of the processes at your campus. Thank you.

The student services team at our campus coordinates the following: new student orientation, first day celebration, mid-point celebration, student appreciation, tutoring, mentoring, share-a-ride arrangements, academic advising, career advising, library and learning resource assistance, graduation ceremony. Each department director has a binder with community resources, including but not limited to: homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters/counseling, food banks, "Dress for Success" programs, rent and utility assistance, psychological counseling, medical and dental care.

We have a Student Services bulletin board that the admissions representatives point out on the prospective student's tour. Student Services are discussed during the enrollent process and during orientation. Students are reminded of these services during the first day and mid-point celebrations.

Kimberly,

Hi! Welcome to the forum. In reading your list of responsibilities for your Student Services department it made me realize that Student Services does so much for the student that may never be seen. Having this type of department is definitely a best practice. Bravo!

I go over every program that we have to offer, Accounting Office Assist, Office Assist, Medical Office Specialist, Adv. Combination Welding. Whichever program interests them that they want to know about, is the program I will go more into detail with. I go over all the classes, give descriptions of each, length of program, scheduled days and times.

Sarah,

WOW! This is a great way to ensure that your students are getting all of the information they need to make the best decision about their career.

Hello,
A great process we have in place is to have the students meets with Student Services while on a tour. Meeting with SS assures the students that we are here to provide them with assistance throughtout their program. SS is here to assist students with challanges, daily struggles and confidence. They will assist students that are having difficulty with transportation, childcare or family support. They encourage the student to continue onto their dream and give them the confidence they need. SS also helps our campus with retention.

Dorothy,

You are right! Meeting with Student Services while on tour is an excellent practice. THis allows the student to ask questions and to feel at ease that there is someone available to assist them if needed.

On my campus we have a full time Student Services Coordinator. When an admissions representative is conducting a tour, a stopping point is always at the Student Services Department. During this initial meeting the Coordinator will predominantly discuss childcare and transportation and will let the prospective student know that she will meet with them on the 5th day of their class session. It is at this time that the SS Coordinator provides in detail what she can assist and offer the student body.

Sheila,

Having a full-time Student Services Coordinator is definitely a best practice at any school. Students are happy to know that their is someone that will assist and advise them throughout their academic career.

Student services is used at my campus as a means to assist students with finding child care, help with transportation challenges, and any type of personal issue that may prevent the student from completing the program.

The admissions representatives informs the student services representative about the student in advance.

I agree. Having a great SS Department can be instrumental in maintaining retention. Often times students drop out of school for reasons that could have been prevented if they simply asked for information or were pointed in the right direction. It is imperative that the Student Services department maintains an excellent rapport with students so that students will go to the SS department with questions.

Housings, study groups, tutoring, carpools if needed. Student services are a great resource for new students

The student services offered at our institution are classes in resume writing, Job Interviewing, effective career techniques and career placement services. Our policy is to refer the student to our career services department when they have specific questions.

We have a very small school (average 6.5 students per class of 10 weeks). we run a "one horse show", which means that I, as the owner, wear many hats. I personally conduct the pre-signup tour, answer questions, provide an oversight of how our program operates, and then have another "paperwork" person handle the actual sign-up process. After that I again meet with the applicant and review state requirements and license procedure to be completed after graduation. We have the "keep it simple" cookies and punch graduation ceremony at the end.

J.,

There is nothing wrong with keeping it simple. It is hard work but I am sure that you feel the gratitude at graduation. :)
