Brandi,

What did this teacher do or say during the hiring process that indicated that she would be a good instructor?

I use the internet and newspaper advertising. The internet brings me more qualified applicants
but employee recruitment is by far the best resource

Jeff,

Many schools have almost given up on newspaper ads in lieu of the internet. Referrals from good faculty members do typically provide the best candidates.

What types of things do you put in your ads to attract the right applicants?

We have been fortunate enough to be able to hire all of our dental assisting instructors from our dental practice. The instructors work together as a dental team Mon-Fri then our dental assisting classes are held every Saturday. They already know each other, work well as a team and they know dental assisting.

The best kind of employee recruitment tends to be word of mouth.
Most of my employees have been hired that way.

Thanks, Connie.

Referrals are a great way to find new employees. One challenge managers face is when they do not hire someone recommended by a current employee. How do you address this issue?

Definitely the best source is Internet, and many time the selection is private.

I no longer use newspaper ads at all to recruit potential instructors. It cost too much money and was always difficult to spell out exactly every characteristic I was searching for. Now I use the internet to post all my job openings. I find it more cost effective and it enables me to communicate clearly the KSAO's! Plus I prefer internet job sites that allow me to link my website so that potential instructors can research our school (to ensure it's a good fit for them).

Randy,

Thanks for this post. The newspaper has really weakened as a source. The best source for new faculty members is often current faculty members.

Recruitment agency - Provides our company with details of suitable candidates for a vacancy and can sometimes be referred to as ‘head-hunters’. They work for a fee and often specialise in particular employment areas e.g. financial services, teacher recruitment

I agree word of mouth or internal recommendations from instructors

Our experience has shown that for us, former students have always made the best instructors. In our case, it's because the students are familiar with the school and how it's run, their instructors get to know them well during the course of the program and can assess their abilities and personalities, and because they've had a good experience here, they tend to be 'loyal' to the school. If we see during their time as students the potential to be instructors, after graduation we bring them in as Teaching Assistants to mould them into Lead Instructors. The TA trial period helps us to see if we made a good choice.

We get more people through word of mouth however we get better qualify instructor from other employees

Thank you for this post, Patricia. Do you have an institutional referral policy that rewards employees for referring a new employee who works out?
