Learning Resource Center

Who should be involved in the development of a Learning Resource Center? How involved should students be?

Hi Syndia
Great question. It takes a lot to develop a learning resource center. Everyone should be involved - students, staff, instructors, grads, employers. Get everyone's ideas. Then check publishers and see what is available in terms of books, online resources, publications, and more. Takes a committee to be effective. Good luck, Susan

At our institution the Director of Placement and Student Services has the responsibility. However we always recive feedback from the teachers as well as the students.

HI Carmen
Always important to get feedback and measure anything that moves. And then make changes based on evaluation of data. Best wishes, Susan

I agree with all of the answers mentioned. I believe the key is staying "current". You must be able to provide the infomation and resources that are available NOW. So getting the input of staff, student body and employers who are currently working in the industry that you specialize in or have made indelible contributions to the industry, is very neccesary.

Exactly, Jennifer. Staying current actually enables a school to forecast what kind of training is needed next. That means advanced training or additional courses to help the grad stay in the field and attain job promotion and salary increases. Best wishes, Susan

Each functional department of your school she be represented while developing your student resource center.

1) Admissions-Creating a student resource center with visual appeal plays an important role when Admissions advisors take prospective students on a tour of the facilities.

2) Education-The quality, quantity, and relevance of the source materials in your student resource center serves as a vital part of the educational tools you provide your student body and the effectiveness of said tools.

3) Financial Aid- Easy to read FA guides provide students with the information they should have access to better help them know about their educational financing.

4) Career Services- Job postings and career serach guides enable students to explore opportinities in their given fields of study.

5) Student Services- Information regarding the services provided to students reinforces the school's commitment to their success

6) Campus Director- Dedicating space for information about the Campus Director and his/her function, as it relates to a student's success, serves as a great tool to define the role of your campus' leadership.

A balanced and in-depth approach to building a student resource center leads to a balanced and comprehensive center for learning.

Hi Peter, Appreciate the very comprehensive response.Certainly agree that everyone on campus should have input re student resource center. For example, sometimes receptionists have the best information since they see leads, and new and enrolled students on a regular basis and have an idea of what is needed. Visually appealing is important as well as easy to use. All students will feel that the school and its staff are caring and concerned about the success of each student. Thanks, Susan
