Helping faculty set goals

If a department has a faculty base with very little turnover how do you keep them motivated to push toward professional development and wanting to continually develop themselves? What are some good goals for a teacher that has been teaching 5+ years?

Excellent question. One thing that my school has done is to develop a faculty development workshop. There is a process by which a faculty member must apply & be accepted to the program. It lasts about two weeks & are actually paid additionally for this time. They are asked to bring a course that they are either struggling with, a new course they will be teaching or one that they feel just needs some new life breathed into it. They then spend the time revising & exploring new methods to use.

The response from long-time faculty members has been great & many have launched from this experience into continually improving their skills & abilities. Just 1 idea.
