Phone Time Management

How do you deal with callers who do not like the fact that you need them to leave a voicemail explaining what the call is about so that you can call them back when you are prepared and available?

Herbert,

If one politely explains in the message what info you need and why you need it, there is no need to worry about how the folks who are leaving the message feel. All one can do is be professional.

I have this same problem, especially when it comes to personal calls. I am so worried that it is about one of my kids that I end up picking up and then feel annoyed that time has been wasted by these calls when there is no big emergency. How can I politely tell people only to call about work related items during business hours without hurting their feelings?
