When do I work the funnel?

Just wondering everyone else's opinion: when do we work the funnel in our initial conversation with our students? Is it when we are doing our needs analysis? Is it after every question we ask them?

Needs analysis when you have ID some specific ares of concern!

I was thinking would it be possible to do a funnel for each of our main categories of the needs analysis (ed. background, why now, current job, POI, college search) but maybe that would be a little overboard?

I'm kind of an old-timer here, been doing this quite a long time.  I really wasn't familiar with the "Funnel" concept, as used in this way, although like a lot of the questioning techniques listed here I realize I have been doing it on a daily basis without knowing it. All the same, having seen it broken down and explained in this way will allow me to improve on the process dramatically I think. No matter how well you know your job - there's always room to learn more and improve!
