When negotiations go wrong, appropriate time to re-negotiate?

When is it so soon, shouldn't you strike while the issue is still at the fore-front?

Todd,

Good question to which I would have to respond...it depends.

I think it depends on how emotions/feelings are going & how this has contributed to the negotiations going "wrong." If tempers are high or starting to rise, it might be better for everyone to take a "breather" so to speak, however that might be, & then come back later.

However, if it's more a matter of lack of clarity as in the parties are not really connecting on the important issues, I think that's a time to stay in there & figure out why we are not connecting. To take a breather at this point ususally won't help & often adds to the confusion.

Hope this helps,
Ryan

I have found waiting up to 24 hours; alowing any emotion to go away works best. Some people become emotional quickly. In my experience high emotion equals low intelligence.

kevin,
I would agree that when we can break off for a little & allow the emotions to settle this is most helpful.
