what are some suggestions on how to motivate staff after lay-off's occur?

this is an excellent question & very difficult. If at all possible, I like to acknowledge the pain & fear that my current team is now experiencing. Some of them will be experiencing what is akin to survivor's guilt. From there I like to try to rebuild their confidence & together determine how to move forward.

I really think that training and having in-service training with staff is very important because some people become complacent with their jobs. People need to understand that jobs are never secure, even if you own the company. In this situation a leader needs to lead and make sure that the staff is focusing on the prize which is the direction the company is trying land.
