Rubrics

How do you involve the students in creating a rubrics?

Roshawna,

I typically give students rubrics for a few "little" assignments before they do them and then I grade and discuss. Then, they have experience with rubrics and when we come to the "big" project, I ask them to create a rubric (can be in groups) based on the assignment instructions. We then go through the rubrics together, come to a consensus and develop a rubric based on their feedback. They then totally understand what is expected of them. It works.

I am excited about the idea of involving students in the implementation of rubrics! Just like you stated earlier I think that involving students will make them aware EXACTLY what the expectations/requirements are.
I also like the idea of creating a final rubric where we come together as a class and I can make modifications based on the criteria that they have come up with.

Ronald,

The more clear the expectations and the criteria in the rubric, the more likely the students will be able to meet the learning outcomes. Thanks for your input.
