What method work best in assessing the student ability to complete the program?

There are many online readiness assessment tools. You can google it to look at several. They do make students think!

And what is your plan if a student is determined to not be ready? Should placement be mandatory? Do we let adults make a "wrong" decision by enrolling in a class that they're not ready for?

Wow,this is an interesting issue. I think at times we do set students up for failure by not being honest with them about their skill set and base knowledge. We need to develop strategies beforehand to deal with this situation. I am sure it happens more often than we think.
