I agree with you. I sometimes have to ask several questions to understand what a student is asking. In addition, some students use “texting” style writing that I am not “hip” with. Many students that attend my live chats often do not participate because of feeling inadequate in regards to timely and writing skills in general. To help with the communication process, I always repeat what the student wrote and I confirm what I interpreted to ensure I understood what was said.

Active listening is more difficult via computer than face to face as you are missing many of the non verbal cue. Just like a phone interview can be more challenging than person to person.

This is true for many students if the course is designed correctly. Students will not have to worry about side issues such as how they look, but they can focus on the substance that they are learning at the time that is best for them.
