Is there any standard for software systems supporting online learning

Software standards are essential part of software systems moving forward and creating proper inter-use. Is there any standards for the online learning systems?

I would think that the standards are continuously changing as the needs of the learners are changing. A few years ago online learning systems were basic lecture, forums, write a paper (like with the University of Phoenix online). Now more systems include interactions through projects and group participation. I have not had alot of experience with alot of different systems so any input on this topic would be useful.

I think it should conform to Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) so it can be hosted in any standards-based learning management system. The standard uses XML, and is based on key standards efforts by ADL, AICC, IMS and IEEE.

The online platforms I am familiar with all use SCORM. I hope the others do as well!
