Combining multiple choice and essay

While creating exams how would you combine the two when grading them automatically?

Elma,
Most of the platforms allow many different types of assessments. The computer will grade the autograded part, but for essays, you will have to go back into the assessment and grade that question.

Exams can make use of both multiple choice questions and essays. When teaching online courses, many of the multiple choice questions are automatically graded, but the essays must be graded manually.

The reason it is helpful to combine both multiple choice questions and essays on the same exam lies with the fact that multiple choice questions do not reflect higher order learning skills. Instead, an essay gives a student an opportunity to develop critical thinking, analysis and evaluation skills, which are examples of higher order learning skills.

The outcome of any exam assessment should be to discover what knowledge a student possesses, but to also discover how effectively a student can apply higher order learning skills.

Thomas,
Ahhhh very good point. We do want our students to be critical thinkers, so applying higher order learning skills is important!
