I have come to realize that you provide this learner with the tools they need and they will be successful. It is a bad idea to try to force them to change their style. It is their style and if it works for them don't try to change it.
lorraine, if only every instructor would follow your wise words here! I meet so many teachers that assume the learners will change, and that is unlikely. It causes much grief and unhappiness for everyone involved.

In addition, I usually try to team up the loner with a compatible co-student. The change that occurs between the two is amazing and very rewarding.
