Textbooks
Ideas from this class have been great in getting students to learn Medical Terminology. Any suggestions on what text books to use to suppleent this learning? I do not presently teach Medical Terminology. I am an RHIA and for the last eight years or so have been a Transcriptionist while raising a family. I am excited about the possibility of teaching Medical Terminology somewhere soon and utilizing some of the learning activities preented in this class. I love Medical Terminology. There is something to be said about knowing a "language" that others do not.
Karla, Elsevier has some wonderful textbooks and online resources on their Evolve website. Please go online and check into the varied tools hey offer

Course .
Traditional methods of teaching medical terminology have never been very effctive and seem even less effective with todays students. I will use almost any method that will help students retain medical terminology.
John, thank you for your commitment to teach in an effective way, even if it is different or unconventional.

Textbooks are great tools but for the subject of terminology it is best to have other resources as well. McGraw-Hill and other publishers have wonderful interactive resources available on their websites if you have adopted their books.
Many of the student textbooks come with a study ware CD. Often these will have games included. Many times I have used the student CD to access a game and have projected the game on to a screen. I invite a student to control the computer, but the whole class participates in the games. They seem to enjoy this. Unfortunately, I have also found that this is the only time that CD is used by some of the students.
Rhonda, it is good to know and use the resources the textbooks provide.

Ours is a little more specific but we use: An Illustrated Guide to Veterinary Medical Terminology, Delmar/Cengage. Seems to work well, but I must say I do like many of the exercises presented in this course and am looking forward to incorporating them into the class.
Gordon, thanks for your positive comments. Good luck and enjoy!

I really like the CD that came with Med Term book, however it has up-dated and now must go online. I would like to have more "interactive activities" but it helps get your feet wet.
Gale, it does help to get your feet wet with something that has been pre-done for you. Then, you can feel good about the students respons to that tupe of activity before you spend time creating your own.
