Word Parts
I have found that introducing students to word parts can be fun. One method i use is to share a long, alphabetical list of phobias...often the students are familiar with some of the terms and the context makes it fascinating and it tends to stick in their minds more readily.

I have students create words with their word parts just to get familiar with words. They don't necessarily make sense but it sure makes them very creative and fun and word parts tend to stick.
Another good idea. Students are generally curious individuals. This probably would be a fun activity.
Karla, curiosity is an adult motivator. We need to find ways to make people curios about our content.
