Term and Definition Matching Cards

I find this activity to be very easy to organize and execute within the classroom. This is not the only activity that I am going to use but it will definitely be one of the first ones that I try. I also like the ball toss activity because I think that over time, students will become aware of what happens and may in turn create more attentive students.

Pixie, I'm glad this activity is one you can use as a first new idea. Good luck in all you do!

I have taugth medical terminology and used flash cards. It works really well. I also encourage the students to make flash cards as well. I find their scores on assignments and test to improve when they use them.

Donna , this is a tried and true method that many instructors have used as you can see from the threads in this course.

Using the flash cards works very well for the visual learners. they are able to see the word and associate the term with seeing it on the cards.

Stephanie, this definitely reinforces the content in a different way than lecture does.

I also have students make their own flash cards. I think this activity helps to reinforce the material. I make up a bunch of my own flash cards on at least 4x6 size. I make different groups; one for prefixes, one for suffixes, one for combining forms etc. I use my cards to play concentration with my students. I try to get some tables together and lay the cards face down. Half of the cards have the word part and the other half contain the definitions. I then have my students get up and stand around the table. They take turns turning over two cards. If they get a match, they hold on to that pair. I find the students get really excited about remembering where certain cards are. They also become extremely encouraging towards one another.

Susan, I love to foster the spirit of collaboration between and amongst students.

I use a small whiteboard cut out with smooth edges in place of flash cards. You can go to the local home depot store and they will cut the whiteboard in your desired sizes. Then you line with duct tape to smooth edges. The students can use appropriate markers to right correct answers down on their personal little whiteboard. The students appear to enjoy this method as well.

donald, thank you for sharing how to create individual white boards inexpensively. We can all benefit from you experience.
