Group Learning

Do you feel that when doing group learning to reinforce lecture material should the instructor always assign students in groups? Or is it ok to allow them to choose groups occasionally? What do you feel is the best way to assign groups to create variety? If a student does not like group learning then is it ok if they work alone during the rest of the class is engaging in group learning?

Phillip, I like to assign groups so that I can mix up the dynamics several times, just like the real world. I do this is a way that looks random with props and candy and a variety of things they can't predict. I never force people to do group work, but the majority of my learners want to be a part of a group, so they work together.
