tell show do

a way I was taught ...instructors who would lecture, and demonstrate and then we would perform the activity...then we would repeat...until mastered...

robert, that pretty much is the "traditional approach" to teaching.

I find it most effective when explain subject, and then show them how to do it. They seem to learn the material better.

Niani, using both the analytical approach and the active approach gives better results in learning.

Learn once, do once, teach once. Tried and true, how I remember being taught and how I continue to teach. Self explanatory really...

Gordon, following a successful formula is a perfect strategy.

One of the most successful lectures I give in dental materials is when I have access to the lab for the cement unit. I lecture on a particular cement, show the students how to mix it and then have them mix the cement themselves. I then continue on to the next cement. Unfortunately I do not always have access to the lab. I tried this approach in the lecture hall but discontinued after I had to explain the mess.
