Health condition impeding long-term memory

I have a student who has had brain surgeries in the past and has affected her memory. There are days she performs well and other days when she does not. She is very interested to learn though. Is there a learning activity you can propose?

Gerard, this indeed is a challenge. Can you have a system to check in with her daily to know where she is? This would allow the 2 of you to plan how to reinforce the information she is not getting.

This is a tricky situation because when other students see/find out that an accomodation is being made for some(a) student, all of a sudden everyone needs accomodations. There is even a tendency for students to start talking about unfair the situation is.

On the other hand, when an individual has such challenges, what is the possiblity for them to secure favorable employment?

It is a challenge and a balancing act. There are some accommodated students who do get jobs that are non-traditional.

Reasonable accomodations should be made in the educational environment as well as future employment. Under ADA, it is the law. Also, if a studentdisability requires accomodations it should not be shared with other students. This seems to be not only a HIPAA issue but also FERPA. For the complainers that also want to jump in on the "special accomodations wagon", request that they provide the proper documentation and that you will be happy to accomodate.
