Controlling the "use" of technology in class

I sometimes find it concerning that a student has a laptop or is facedown in a cellphone. Some of them take notes in their cell phone and laptops, but most times I find that they are actually on Facebook or focusing on something that is not the topic of discussion. Then they usually do poorly on the test. I hate to make them put away these devices that they live through, or restrict the ones that legitimately use this technology. Does anyone have any suggestions for controlling this for the benefit of the student?

Jacob,
good question & unfortunately a common problem. A couple of options of varying degrees: 1) do not allow the devices at all. 2) make an agreement with the students that if they use devices for notes & then do poorly on tests they will not be allowed to use them anymore; 3) heavily monitor & if you catch them doing other than notes on devices they are not allowed to use them anymore.

We do not allow the use of technology in our classrooms. We use to allow the students to use laptops to take notes but unfortunately it became a problem with the focus and staying on task. They were to tempted to play games or go on other sites.

Julie,
unfortunately we sometimes have to go to these extremes with the students as a few can ruin it for the many. But, they have to understand that this type of behavior would not be tolerated in the workplace.

as a nursing instructor I struggle with limiting the use of electronic devices as often they are able to download drug references or other clinical apps to assist them clinically, however, this generation tends to live thru their devices and tend to use them for purposes other than reference. we have had to prohibit their use as they cannot define what is appropriate and what is not

Technology be can be important in class, make it fun, use it for resources, look up answers, ideams, great for visual creative. Give phone breaks.
