Multiple kinds of knowledge

I teach general education and I have lots of different types of students in my classes with varying degrees of ability. I find it difficult to tailor my classes to be able to suit all these different students at once.

I come across the same thing in my classes. I found that the best approach for me is to test the students knowledge first. That way I can group them together and address each group based on their needs.

I start my class with general questioning to get an idea of who knows what. I then make the stronger students leaders of the team. Students sometimes learn better from their peers.

Ted,

This is an excellent way to informally assess your students previous knowledge of the subject. It also, provides the instructor with ideas for opportunity, in regards to class lesson planning.
