Documentation of everything is very important as students will always question you regarding grades, attendance and practical exams. have a great rubric so that students can truly evaluate themselves. We sometimes have students complete a rubric on themselves. They are usually more critical on themselves than we are as instructors.

I agree about the documentation (students memory is selective). If students can realize we are preparing them for work, where things like attendance, grooming, language, and professionalism are valued and expected, they might be more compliant.

it is very important the you explain to your students that tardiness plays a big part when coming to school. explain to them that it effects there future work habits and being late all the time to work or school and explain to them that some jobs work on point system so you only have so many times that you are allowed to be late before your written up or even laid off. so let them know if really serious about the job or even keeping the job it is very important to be there and to be on time

Students should prioritize attendance. Unfortunately, they seem to separate school being different from the work setting. But the reality is there is no difference. Both school and work have expectations, and a poor attendance pattern that's not corrected is likely to follow that student in their job (until they get canned for attendance issues).
