About me

Activity

As instructor, my job is not exclusive to teaching only.  I also believe that I play an important role in keeping the numbers up.  However, retention to me is not only about keeping students.  It is about keeping students, making them happy and making sure they stay happy.  I have former students who still contact me to tell me that their bosses are impressed with them and they thank me because I helped make it happen.  Then they recommend the school to their friends.  I'm sure I'm not the only one who gets this kind of feedback.

I also taught in an institution that had to have two graduation cermonies in one day because… >>>

Whenever I am assigned to teach Management Skills, my favorite quote that I always share with my students is this one from Warren Buffett, "I look for three things in hiring people.  The first is personal integrity, the second is intelligence, and the third is a high energy level.  But if you don't have the first, the other two will kill you."  I want my students to realize how important integrity is in one's personal and professional relationships.  Integrity covers everything. If you have it, I will trust you with my own life and sleep tight.

This course introduced me to something very new to me.  I never had the chance to get involved in any service learning activity before, and this course provided me with what I need to know about service learning and its importance to the institution, students, and the community.  I have been recently assigned to start a service learning program for our new program, and I thought it was as simple as finding a site and get them to allow us to do service learning.  Well, it was not.  Now, I am excited to work on this project because I feel that I… >>>

@Icenance : Hi Nancy, I share your predicament.  If I get a penny every time I say "Please put your phone away," "no facebook, please," etc...

Instead of rewarding them for not doing what they are not supposed to be doing in the first place, I would probably do the opposite--take points off of their class participation grade for doing what they are not supposed to be doing while in class.

It is also important to set the rules on day one.  Append your rules to the course syllabus and have them sign a copy for you to keep.

I previously shared that my students and I are business partners. The same relationship must exist between instructors and administration. As an instructor, while I believe in delivering quality education and producing quality graduates, I also believe in the importance of numbers. By working together and being consistent, the administration and the academic force can successfully mold students into better individuals, both personally and professionally. Tough love is what I'm talking about.
On day one I tell my students that we are like business partners. Their goals are my goals, and it is my business to help them reach their potential. As "business partners" we will work together to achieve their goals, and together we will do our best to make that happen. Together we will identify their SWOT and work on them just like business partners. It is important to me that they feel and believe that their success is also my success.

Taking this course is another way of coping with stress.  The tips and advices shared by other attendees are very helpful.

When dealing with stress, it is good to pause decide whether to react to it or not. As human beings with emotions, we tend to react right away. If we can push our E(motions) to the end, and C (see) in the first place, then we don't REACT but CREATE something positive, instead. I know this sounds corny, but it's less stressful!
