This module taught me that students learn in different ways and that effective teachers use differentiated instruction and reasonable accommodations to help all students succeed. I learned that differentiated instruction involves adjusting teaching methods, activities, and assessments to meet students' individual learning needs, interests, readiness levels, and learning styles while maintaining the same learning goals.

I also learned that reasonable accommodations help remove barriers for students with disabilities without changing the learning expectations. Examples include extended time on assignments and tests, preferential seating, audiobooks, text-to-speech technology, graphic organizers, modified note-taking support, and alternative ways for students to demonstrate their learning.… >>>

This module taught me that mental health conditions can significantly affect a student's learning, behavior, attendance, concentration, memory, and social interactions. I learned that students with mental health challenges, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, may need additional support, understanding, and accommodations to be successful in the classroom.

I learned that students with bipolar disorder may experience periods of high energy, impulsivity, or difficulty focusing, as well as periods of depression, low motivation, and fatigue. Students with schizophrenia may have challenges with concentration, processing information, communication, or distinguishing reality from symptoms they may be experiencing. These conditions can impact academic performance… >>>

This module taught me that students learn in different ways and that learning disabilities do not reflect a student's intelligence or potential. I learned that students with dyslexia may struggle with reading, spelling, and processing written information, while students with dyscalculia may have difficulty understanding numbers, math concepts, and calculations. Students with ADD or ADHD may experience challenges with attention, focus, organization, time management, and impulse control.

I learned that effective teaching strategies can help these students succeed. These strategies include providing clear instructions, breaking tasks into smaller steps, using visual aids and hands-on activities, allowing extra time when needed,… >>>

This module taught me the importance of providing accommodations that allow students with physical or sensory disabilities to fully access instruction, participate in classroom activities, and demonstrate their learning. I learned that accommodations do not change the learning objectives but instead remove barriers that may prevent students from successfully engaging in the curriculum.

Examples of accommodations may include preferential seating, extended time on assignments and tests, assistive technology, audiobooks or text-to-speech software, enlarged print materials, captioned videos, accessible classroom layouts, and alternative methods for completing assignments.

I also learned that it is my legal responsibility to implement the accommodations outlined… >>>

This module taught me that teachers have important legal and ethical responsibilities when working with students who have IEPs and 504 Plans. One of my primary responsibilities is to review and understand each student's plan and ensure that all required accommodations and modifications are implemented consistently in the classroom.

Some key legal responsibilities include:

Following all accommodations and modifications listed in a student's IEP or 504 Plan.
Providing students with equitable access to instruction, assessments, and classroom activities.
Maintaining the confidentiality of student information.
Documenting accommodations and supports provided to students when appropriate.
Collaborating with special education teachers, counselors, administrators,… >>>

This module taught me the importance of creating an inclusive learning environment that supports the success of all students, including those with disabilities. I learned that every student has unique strengths and challenges, and that accommodations and modifications outlined in IEPs and 504 Plans are essential for providing equitable access to learning. I also learned that barriers to learning are often found in the instructional environment rather than within the student, and that effective teachers use multiple teaching and assessment strategies to meet diverse learning needs.

I will apply this knowledge by reviewing student IEPs and 504 Plans, providing appropriate… >>>

This module taught me that effective assessments should allow all students the opportunity to demonstrate their learning by removing unnecessary barriers and providing multiple ways to show what they know. I learned the importance of aligning assessments with learning goals, offering appropriate accommodations, providing student choice when possible, and using assessments to support learning rather than simply assign grades.

I will implement this knowledge by designing assessments that are accessible to all learners, including students with IEPs and 504 Plans. I will use a variety of assessment methods such as skills demonstrations, projects, simulations, quizzes, and reflections so students can… >>>

A strategy I use to make sure assessments connect to the learning goal is to first identify exactly what students should know or be able to do by the end of the lesson. I then design assessment questions and activities that directly measure that objective rather than unrelated content. I also use rubrics, skills checklists, and formative assessments throughout instruction to ensure students are progressing toward the learning goal. This helps me accurately measure student learning and competency while providing meaningful feedback for improvement.

One barrier I have seen is that some students struggle with test anxiety, time management, and understanding what is being assessed. These challenges can prevent students from accurately demonstrating what they know and can do. To address this, I use a variety of assessments, provide clear expectations, and give feedback throughout the learning process so students have multiple opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and skills.

This module taught me that assessments are much more than grades. Assessments provide valuable information about student learning, progress, and competency development. I learned the importance of aligning assessments with learning objectives and outcomes so that they accurately measure what students are expected to know and be able to do. I also learned the difference between formative assessments, which provide feedback during learning, and summative assessments, which evaluate learning at the end of instruction.

I learned that effective assessment should be ongoing, meaningful, and connected to real-world skills. In a Health Science classroom, this means assessing not only knowledge but… >>>
