My Experience

I watched brilliant students freeze up the moment pencil hit paper. They were trying to draw the outfit before understanding the attitude. My breakthrough approach relies on what I call the Zero-Gravity Gesture Line.

I used a Technique and  I forbid students from drawing outlines or garments for the first 15 minutes of class. Instead, using charcoal or soft lead (6B), they must capture the movement of the spine in under three seconds. We focus on the exaggeration of the 9-head croquis—pushing the hip axis up on the standing leg and dropping the shoulder axis on the opposite side.
