I realize I am on the right path with working on essential/employability skills development with students and the importance this has on their success in WBL.
There are so many basic skills students need before entering the workplace. Sometimes it is easy to forget that high school students might not know how to write a professional email or build their resume. Trying to incorporate these skills into the classroom is an important stepping stone to getting students into the workplace.
While I am aware of paid-internships for high school CTE students, I have not seen them used in the format shared in the Urban Alliance model...where at-risk students are identified for these opportunities versus a traditional CTE student. It is an interesting concept, as I understand the benefit to provide this as an option to those students who have to support themselves; I truly just hadn't thought about it in this way for this segment of the population.
Work based skills can only be developed through hands on experience. Students will only grasped the concept through preparation and daily activities.
