How does an online course differ from an on- site course?

I would like to know the main differences between an online and an on- site course

The instructor establishes rapport with students through written communication.

Melva,
An online course is one that is offered over the internet through a course management system. It can be synchronous (teacher and all students access at the same time) or it can be asynchronous. An onsite course is what we think of as a traditional course--a course that is offered in traditional classrooms, sometimes referred to as "brick and mortar" courses. The third type of course is a blended or hybrid course. This is a course that has some parts online, and other parts in a traditional classroom.
