Difficult employees

So many ideas and suggestions needed here on dealing with difficult employees.

Is it ok to ask the employee for a break or time out and re-visit the situation at a later time?

Dealing wit difficult employees is never easy. Before meeting with them I try to discover what is the cause of their difficulty. I.e. don't like the job, co-worker issues, tasks concerns.

I believe that "some" difficult employees will never change. When that is the case, it's time to let them go. However, observing and evaluating an employee, then putting suggestions in writing that can help make a positive change in the difficult person- should make a difference. Sometimes, talking to the difficult employee to discover why the person feels the way s/he does and then allowing the person to come up with a solution to the issue- can empower the person. Thus, the difficult employee changes into an effective worker.
